Snakes and Ladders over coffee: celebrating 10 years of "coffee group"

By Jane Comben

The pool is full of splashing kids while the adults stand about chatting. Quite a contrast to a nervous circle of 12 random couples a decade earlier.

It's been 10 eventful years since our first ante-natal class and the "coffee group" decided to celebrate by hiring out the local pool to accommodate all the resulting families. Our first born have all reached double figures and many have a few siblings as well. While a couple of families have moved away and a couple more have joined the fold, the "coffee group" is still going strong. As I look back over those years it seems rather like Snakes and Ladders. We've all moved up the board but at different speeds and by different paths.

No one's house was big enough so we hired the local pool!

The weekly coffee mornings were instigated by our ante-natal class teachers as a support system for all the new mums and they were a great success. Over the years meetings have morphed into sporadic meals out. The topics of conversation have changed but the support and advice remain as valuable as ever. We're still a diverse group of women going through much the same things and "coffee group" gives us an excuse to get out the house and ask the questions too banal or embarassing to ask anywhere else!

With many throws of the die there's been some tragedies and triumphs along the way. Ladders for many, snakes for some. Lots more children and a few less marriages.  Unlike the majority I experienced a relationship break-down early on and spent time as a solo parent. On the upside, I became the relative "expert" for others facing similar situations later on. Hopefully some of my anecdotes and advice helped.

A nearly complete line-up of the coffee group

What with work and our own lives it would have been so easy to lose touch. I'm grateful for those few who've kept us organised. Who knows what the next decade will bring? I'm sure together, with a few laughs, we can face anything. Thank you ladies.
